The
nine nights and ten days of the month ‘October’ or “nav ratri” is celebrated
with great zeal that is dedicated to the worship of the Hindu
deity Durga. The beginning of spring and the beginning of autumn are considered
to be important bonds of climatic and solar influences.
Actually Navratri is celebrated five times a year. They are Vasanta Navratri, Ashadha Navratri, the Sharad Navratri, and the Paush/Magha Navratri. Out of all these
Sharad Navratri is the most important of the all Navratris. It is simply called
Maha Navratri (the Great Navratri) and is celebrated in the 'pratipada'
(first day) of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Ashvina. It is celebrated
mostly in all states of India including West Bengal and Gujarat especially the East.
Goddess Durga the symbol of shakti is worshipped with great ardour. She slays
the evil to establish peace and prosperity on the earth.
These nine days are celebrated with much fervor by fasting
on all nine days and worshiping the Mother Goddess in her different forms.
On this fifth day of Navratri, Mother Skandmata is worshiped and she is
considered as the commander in chief in the war against demons. She is
accompanied by Lord Skanda in his infant form in her lap.
Kumar Kartikeya is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parwati, which is why Goddess Parwati is also called as Goddess “Maheshwari”.” Skandamata” has four arms and three eyes, in one of her hands i.e. in her right upper arm she holds her son Skanda and in her right hand she is holding a lotus flower. The left arm is in a pose to grant boons with grace and the lower left hand she is again holding a lotus flower. She is often depicted as seated on a lotus.
